Dallol Depression Trip Introduction

Danakil Desert Ethiopia Tour 6 Nights/ 7 days

A friendly welcome, a dynamic landscape of earthquakes, active volcano lake and hydrothermal fields, geology and local mythology – Travel the Danakil Depression climb Mount Ertale with Afar Tribe porters accompanied with camels and spend a night under the stars visiting the dramatic activity of the volcano.

This exciting inclusive Danakil desert Ethiopia tour package covers one of the earth’s driest deserts and the all year round active volcano of Ertale. The tour package traverses through the land of the hominid Lucy and the Afar tribe known for sharpening their tooth and nomadic way of life.

In northeastern Ethiopia one of the earth’s driest deserts, the Danakil Depression is making way for a new ocean. This region of the African continent, known to geologists as the Afar Depression, is pulling apart in two directions—a process that is gradually thinning the earth’s rocky outer skin. The continental crust under Afar-Danakil Depression is a mere 20 kilometres from top to bottom, less than half its original thickness, and parts of the area are over 100 meters below sea level. Low hills to the east are all that stops the Red Sea from encroaching.

Such proximity to the planet’s scorching interior has transformed the Danakil Depression into a dynamic landscape of earthquakes, volcanoes and hydrothermal fields—making Afar Depression a veritable paradise for people who are eager to understand those processes. Daytime temperatures soar to 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer, and no rain falls for much of the year. This adventure takes you on this amazing place and to the Tigray people mining the salt along with their camel caravan.
